Sutter’s Fort

1839-1846
Sutter's Fort
John Augustus Sutter receives a land grant from the Mexican government along the Sacramento River. In building Sutter’s Fort (and later Sutter’s Mill), he relies on native labor, including Patwin, and brutally raids Indian villages to gather laborers. Catholic missions also force Indians into servitude.
